Research Topic:

Production of Astaxanthin-loaded Melanin-like Core-shell Nanoformulation for Multiple Sclerosis Therapy

Project description:

a large portion of the global population. These conditions influence the patients, care takers and the health system. The progression of these diseases is varying from patient to patient and has to be treated individually with a life-long Disease-Modifying Therapies (DMTs). DMTs can include various chemical based drug which come with different side effects. An alternative to these can be natural bioactives with characteristics, like antioxidative, anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective behavior, avoiding the side effects. Bioactives can, in case of MS, be used as a treatment to decrease the symptoms of the disease. A good example for a bioactive component is Astaxanthin (ASX) which has the specific characteristics mentioned above. But ASX also has downsides, including pour water solubility and stability issues against light and temperature. The stability problem can be addressed by shielding the ASX from the external influences. A promising material for that is Polydopamine (PDA) which can form Chronic disease like Multiple Sclerosis (MS) are impactinga core-shell by using a nanoemulsion approach. PDA has superior features like light absorption, radical scavenging, biocompatibility and biodegradability.

This work aims for the production and optimization of the wet-lab process forming an ASX‑MNP (melanin-like nanoparticle) nanoformulation applicable to MS patients. Furthermore, this will be transferred to a Robotic Process Automation (RPA), including a Machine Learning (ML) model. With RPA and ML, it is possible to adjust and optimize the process more easily.
