Short CV

Martin Bastmeyer is Professor for Cell- and Neurobiology at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). He was born in Trier and studied biology at the University of Kaiserslautern.

After his PhD thesis on meiotic spindle formation at the Max-Planck-Institute for Biology in Tübingen he started his first postdoctoral position in developmental neurobiology with Claudia Stuermer at the Friedrich-Miescher-Laboratory in Tübingen. From 1993-1994 he was a postdoctoral fellow at the Salk Institute in San Diego (USA) with Dennis O’Leary. Back in Germany, he was a research associate and Assistant Professor at University Konstanz where he also received his habilitation.

In 1998 he was awarded a Heisenberg Stipend from the DFG. From 2001-2004 he was a Professor for Neurobiology at the University Jena. Since 2004 he is Professor at the KIT and Head of the Zoological Institute. He is spokesperson for Biomedical Photonics of the Karlsruhe School of Optics and Photonics (KSOP) and spokesperson for Nano-Biology of the DFG Center for Functional Nanostructures (CFN).

Since 2011 he is Dean of the Faculty for Chemistry and Biosciences and since 2012 spokesperson of the BioInterfaces Programme of the Helmholtz Society. His research interests include zebrafish nervous system development, axonal guidance mechanisms, cell adhesion and migration, cell mechanics, surface bio-functionalization, cell growth in tailored 3D scaffolds and the development of advanced light microscopy techniques.
