Abstract

The CellChip is made of plastic and contains 900 micro-containers per cm2. Each of these is occupied by some 5000 to 10,000 cellular organisms. This allows a cell density of some 50 % of that of an intact liver. Such bioreactors are suitable for use as artificial organs, to be used outside the body. They can also be used for medical research, to some extent in lieu of using laboratory animals.
